Mercer County Release Records
A Mercer County release marks the end or change of one custody episode. It does not always mean a return home. A person can leave Mercer County Jail on bail, time served, county parole, a court order, or sentence expiration. The same person can instead move to another jail, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, a hospital, federal authority, or ICE. The destination controls which record should confirm the event.
Released Mercer County inmates usually disappear from the jail's current population table. That makes roster absence a weak clue, not proof. The best record ties a name and identifier to the facility, booking, actual release time, legal basis, and destination. A PA SAVIN notice or court docket can support that record, but each source answers only part of the question.
- Release
- A physical departure or custody change recorded by the agency holding the person.
- Parole
- Conditional service of the rest of a sentence under community supervision.
- Probation
- A court-ordered community sentence or term that does not itself mean jail custody.
- Discharge
- The end of the sentence or supervision obligation, not merely release from a cell.
- Detainer
- A hold or request that can send a person to another authority instead of the community.
Mercer County Release Paths
Different Mercer County release paths leave different evidence. Bail can free a person before trial while the criminal case remains open. Time served or sentence expiration ends the custodial part of a sentence. County or state parole continues the sentence outside the institution. A dismissal may supply legal authority for release, but another case or detainer can delay the physical exit.
| Recorded event | Meaning | Best next check |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or pretrial release | Community release while the case can remain pending | UJS docket and jail release record |
| Time served or expiration | The calculated custodial term ends | Sentence order and custodian record |
| County or state parole | Release to supervision, not discharge | Docket, PA DOC locator, and supervising office |
| Transfer or furlough | Departure from the ordinary jail population, often with custody continuing | Mercer transfer report and receiving agency |
| Federal or ICE pickup | Mercer custody ends while another authority takes control | BOP, federal docket, USMS, or ICE ODLS |
A hospital movement and a furlough also differ from ordinary community release. Read the label as written. Never convert “transferred” into “free,” or a booking photograph into proof of a later release.
Note: Confirm the destination because the same jail departure can lead to community release, supervision, hospital care, or another custodian.
Inside a Mercer Release Record
A complete Mercer County Jail release record is more detailed than the public roster. The public current list shows a name, commitment date and time, admission type, and committing authority. Its appended transfer block adds a release date and time plus a location label for certain transfers, furloughs, and hospital movements. It does not publish a complete bond, time-served, or community-release history.
| Field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Full name and identifier | Connects the record to the correct person and custody episode |
| Admission or commit date | Marks the start of the relevant jail stay |
| Booking or inmate number | Separates similar names and repeat admissions |
| Actual release date and time | Records when that custodian ended or changed custody |
| Release type or legal authority | Distinguishes bail, sentence completion, parole, order, or movement |
| Destination or receiving agency | Shows whether the person entered the community or another system |
| Supervising agency or detainer | Identifies control that may continue after the jail exit |
No official Mercer County source in the research states a set public retention period for normal release records. Old and recent transfer rows appeared together. That visible behavior is not a retention rule, so an older record should be requested from its custodian.
Mercer Release Turnover Explained
The Mercer County Jail reports enough movement to show why a live list cannot serve as history. Its Records Department processes admissions and releases while coordinating with county courts and other jurisdictions. A name can leave the current list soon after staff complete a release or transfer, yet no historical community-release row is promised online.
The jail's published figures describe workload, not the count of unique people released to the community. Transfers and repeat admissions can be part of the total. The key point is simple: high turnover makes a present-tense roster a poor archive of Mercer County released inmates.
Request Mercer County Release Records
Start with the Jail Records Department at 55 Thompson Road, Mercer, PA 16137, 724-662-2700 extension 2335. A call can identify the office's record name. For a written request with Right-to-Know Law procedures, use the Mercer County Open Records Office, 125 S. Diamond Street, Suite 103, Mercer, PA 16137. Its posted office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays except holidays.
- Identify the person, date of birth or other known identifier, approximate admission date, and docket or booking number.
- Ask for an existing admission record and release record, including actual date and time, recorded disposition, and destination if maintained.
- Request electronic copies and all reasonably segregable public portions. Do not ask the agency to create an explanation.
- Submit the request to Mercer County for a county booking. Send a separate PA DOC request for a state sentence or SCI Mercer record.
- Compare the response with SAVIN and the court docket. A transfer log alone may not identify community release.
Pennsylvania agencies ordinarily respond within five business days by granting, denying with reasons, or invoking a lawful extension. Fees follow the current Office of Open Records schedule, so confirm the amount rather than assuming a total. The official Mercer Open Records screenshot below shows the local route used for a written request.
View Mercer County's official Open Records page.
The county page identifies the custodian and submission channel; it does not turn the request process into a live release tracker.
Note: A narrow request tied to one booking is easier to locate and less likely to mix separate Mercer County custody episodes.
Mercer Release Record Access
Pennsylvania's Right-to-Know Law, 65 P.S. §§ 67.101 through 67.3104, presumes qualifying agency records are public while preserving exemptions and other law. Criminal investigative material, private data, juvenile records, and sealed material can be withheld or redacted. The agency should provide reasonably segregable public parts when only part of a record is protected.
A public docket may omit sealed, expunged, juvenile, or Clean Slate limited-access cases. A missing result means “not found in the public search,” not “no case existed.”
The UJS portal can show bail events, dispositions, sentence terms, credit, parole or probation orders, revocations, and case closure. It can explain legal authority, but the jail record or SAVIN event better establishes the physical custody change. Pennsylvania's expungement and limited-access provisions appear in 18 Pa.C.S. §§ 9122 through 9122.5.
Mercer Pretrial Release Review
Mercer County's Pretrial and Bail Review Program is a distinctive local release route. It began in December 1996 and serves eligible detainees who were not released by a district justice during preliminary proceedings. Brian Faber is the listed contact at 724-662-3800 extension 2422.
The program's existence does not prove that a named detainee qualified, received approval, or left jail. The court docket should show the controlling bail event or order, while Jail Records should confirm the actual exit and any remaining hold. A person released through pretrial review still has an open court process unless the case is separately resolved.
Note: A bail order may precede physical release when processing, another case, or a detainer still must be resolved.
Find Mercer County Released Inmates
Begin with the custody system and one stable identifier. A last-name match is not enough. Compare a date of birth or age, booking or inmate number, docket number, committing county, and custody dates. Names can vary across the jail report, UJS, VINELink, PA DOC, BOP, and ICE. Remove optional search terms one at a time if a spelling or suffix causes a miss.
- Search the Mercer Jail Report by last name, then review the complete current and transfer/furlough reports.
- If the person remains on the current table, treat that as current county custody at the report time.
- If a transfer row matches, preserve its exact date, time, and destination label without calling it community release.
- Check PA SAVIN and the UJS docket for a custody event and its legal basis.
- Search both PA DOC locator modes if a state commitment or parole is possible.
- Use BOP, the federal docket, USMS, or ICE only when that separate authority fits the case.
- Call Jail Records or file a narrow request when public tools do not establish the release.
A person who leaves the live Mercer jail roster may have been released, transferred, furloughed, hospitalized, or moved on a detainer. Roster absence alone proves none of those outcomes.
The Mercer County 24-Hour Releases page explains why the county report cannot be filtered into an official same-day release feed.
Mercer State Release Search
The PA DOC Inmate and Department Supervised Individual Locator contains two datasets. Inmate mode covers people under present DOC institutional jurisdiction. Supervised Individual mode is the more useful public route for a person released from an SCI to current state parole supervision. Search both before drawing a conclusion.
| Locator mode | Search fields | Useful result fields |
|---|---|---|
| Inmate | Name, inmate number, gender, county, location, citizenship, DOB or age | Identity, current and permanent location, committing county, image |
| Supervised Individual | Name, parole or inmate number, gender, DOB or age, release date, state, location | Parole number, Release Date, state, physical identifiers, image, last update |
The supervised result's “Release Date” is a past release-to-supervision field, not a forecast. The public locator does not show fields labeled projected, tentative, minimum, maximum, or controlling maximum date. It updates daily, but same-day changes still need SAVIN or facility confirmation.
Open the official PA DOC locator shown here.
The two locator modes distinguish current prison custody from current community supervision; neither is a complete historical discharge archive.
Note: Preserve the locator's last-update value when comparing it with a same-day SAVIN notice or facility confirmation.
Mercer Post-Release Supervision
Mercer County has an unusual supervision structure. The Pennsylvania Parole Board makes eligible state parole decisions, while PA DOC handles field supervision. PA DOC also identifies Mercer and Venango as exceptions where the Mercer District Office oversees county adult probation and parole. A court docket should first establish whether the person has a county or state sentence.
The Mercer District Office is at Creekside Office Complex, Suite 102, 8362 Sharon-Mercer Road, P.O. Box 547, Mercer, PA 16137, 724-662-2380. An office assignment confirms supervision jurisdiction, not a person's present location or full status. The Mercer post-release supervision page explains how the DOC locator, court record, Board Action, and assigned office fit together.
Mercer Release Reentry Services
Both major Mercer County facilities publish reentry-related services, but the systems remain separate. Mercer County Jail's Counseling Department works with courts and outside agencies. SCI Mercer's Reentry Service Office provides workshops and community connections for people approaching minimum or release dates. These program descriptions show available transition channels.
Participation is never proof that a named person was released, paroled, or discharged. County jail counseling cannot confirm a state sentence result, and the SCI office does not create a Mercer County Jail release record. Use the program source for planning context, then use the correct custody record for proof.
Mercer County Release Alerts
Mercer County confirms that its jail participates in PA SAVIN, delivered through VINELink. The service can report release, transfer, furlough, and escape events contributed by the jail. Statewide coverage also includes Pennsylvania prisons and state parole. A matching alert is useful event evidence, but it does not rule out a warrant, detainer, supervision, or pickup by another agency.
Search by selecting Pennsylvania and matching the person's name and available facility details. Prospective users can register for phone, text, email, or app notice. The phone registration line is 866-972-7284, with TTY at 866-847-1298. The Pennsylvania Megan's Law registry is different. It covers only people legally required to register and cannot serve as a general Mercer County released inmate list.
Note: Register before the expected event because a later enrollment may not recreate an earlier Mercer County release alert.
Getting Home After Mercer Release
Mercer County Community Transit provides advance-registration, door-to-door service across the county. Riders must schedule by 2 p.m. on the working day before travel. That can help only when the release time is known early enough to plan. It is not a walk-up jail shuttle.
The published Shenango Valley Shuttle Service routes do not establish a stop at the jail. Mercer County Jail also publishes no routine release time, family waiting area, taxi instructions, or named release door. Families should not infer those logistics from the custody record. Confirm the expected timing with the facility and arrange a lawful pickup without blocking jail operations.
Mercer Federal Release Transfers
A release from Mercer County Jail can be a handoff. The BOP Inmate Locator covers sentenced federal people from 1982 forward and can show a Release Date plus location or status. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” speaks only to BOP custody. Federal supervision, a state case, or immigration detention may still follow.
A federal pretrial defendant may never appear in BOP because the U.S. Marshals Service can use local or contract beds. In that case, the federal docket and responsible district are better sources. When a Mercer jail departure may be an immigration handoff, use ICE ODLS. It searches current ICE custody by A-number and country of birth, or exact biographical details. None of these systems should be collapsed into a claim that the person is free.
Mercer State Release History
SCI Mercer's history affects older release searches. The institution opened in 1978 as the State Regional Correctional Facility and initially received short-term male county offenders from 14 northwestern counties. It became a state correctional institution in 2008. An older record that says SRCF Mercer should not be forced into today's county-jail system.
Both the former SRCF name and current SCI name belong with Pennsylvania DOC records. A transfer from SCI Mercer to another SCI remains state custody. Release to parole may appear in the supervised locator, while a person who reaches maximum discharge can disappear because the public locator covers current inmates and supervised people rather than every historical release.
Note: Search older SCI Mercer records under the institution name used when the custody event occurred.
Where Mercer Release Records Appear
Choose a source for the custody question it can answer. A negative result has little value when the wrong system was searched.
| Source | What it supports | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Mercer Jail Report | Current county presence or a labeled transfer/furlough movement | No complete release archive or 24/72-hour filter |
| Jail Records and RTKL | Actual local booking and release record | Must identify the right booking and custodian |
| PA SAVIN/VINELink | Reported release, transfer, furlough, or escape event | Does not rule out another hold |
| UJS docket | Legal authority, bail, sentence, and disposition | May not show the physical exit minute |
| PA DOC locators | Current state custody or current supervision after release | Not a historical discharge archive |
| BOP or ICE | Federal prison status or current ICE detention | Separate systems with distinct coverage |
Is a missing jail name proof of release? No. Check the transfer block, SAVIN, court docket, and Jail Records before describing the result.
Mercer County Release Facilities
Mercer County release research spans two physical correctional facilities, a supervision office, and two federal systems. Each page follows the record created by that facility or authority.
- Mercer County Jail holds county detainees and sends people to the community, supervision, or another custodian.
- State Correctional Institution at Mercer (SCI Mercer) is a PA DOC prison whose parole and discharge records belong to state systems.
- Mercer District Parole Office confirms the relevant supervision structure but is not a jail.
- Federal contract/custody network requires BOP, federal court, or USMS records based on the stage of the case.
- ICE detention network is checked when a county departure may be an immigration transfer.
A current-custody result, a release event, and a discharge from all supervision are three different facts. Keep the source, date, and stated object of release attached to every conclusion.
